Before & After:  Summer 2008 Project in University Place, Washington

The clients originally wanted to screen the view (of the neighbor's driveway and garbage cans) from their living and dining room windows. The awkward-looking planter in front of the house was not part of the project, but eventually we realized that it had been built by the previous owner to hide the utility boxes that serve the houses in the cul-de-sac. Ugly as they are, utility boxes must be readily accessible; homeowners may face a fine if utility crews cannot get to the boxes in an emergency. The solution was a new planting design employing a mixed planting of small trees, shrubs, and perennials that provide color and texture year-round. The utility boxes are now accessible, and in a couple of years will be virtually unnoticeable as the plantings around them fill in.

Below is the initial draft of this design.
